  • Washer/Dryer tips

    • Clean the lint filter before each load. Lint blocks your dryer's hot air circulation; even a little can degrade results.
    • Don't mix clothes weights. Dense fabrics keep light fabrics damp, so separate weights in the dryer the way you separate colors in the wash.
    • Pre-soak badly soiled laundry overnight in detergent. That will break up the stains and prevent wasting energy re-washing.
  • Cooking tips

    • Use glass instead of metal. Glass conducts heat much better than metal, so you can reduce temperatures by 25 degrees and reduce the risk of burning cakes.    
    • Ceramics conduct heat better than metal as well, so you can save 25 degrees baking casseroles, bread pudding, cobblers and dishes where browning isn't essential.
  • Leaky Faucet

    • Check for leaky faucets. A single leaky hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month.
    • If your water heater is 70 gallons, a leaky faucet can cause you to pay to heat three full tanks of water for nothing.
  • Replace Appliances

    • Try replacing old bulbs with the curly CFL bulb; they use 80% less energy and come in a variety of brightness.
    • Or try LED bulbs; they may cost a little more but they can cut energy by 90% and last up to 15 years.
    • Today's gas ranges, dryers and water heaters have pilotless ignitions. That saves 40% over piloted systems which need to burn 24/7.

  • Dishwasher

    • Only run the dishwasher when it is a full load.
    • Scrape off any food and empty liquids; let your dishwasher do the rest, no need to pre-rinse.
    • Set the dry cycle to "air dry;" that saves energy and helps prevent spots.
    • Run your dishwasher at night; running the dishwasher during the day adds heat and humidity to an already warm house.
  • Misc.

    • Try to avoid using your big appliances between 3pm - 7pm. This is generally the time with the biggest demand on energy.
    • Use the "delay wash" option on appliances to make it easy to use during off peak hours. Check your manuals for options.
    • Use power strips with on/off switches. You can make it easier to turn off gadgets that don't need to be plugged in 24/7.
  • Air Conditioners

    • Turn your air conditioner up from 68 to 73. This change makes it 40% easier for your air conditioner to keep your home cool.
    • Replace your air conditioner filter every month to remove inside dust and outside dirt.
    • Plant shade trees around your yard. They protect your home exterior paint, reduce the carbon footprint of your home and they cut your air conditioner's work by at least 10%.
    • Don't turn your air conditioner on full blast when you come home to a hot and humid house. To cool the room faster and save energy, open some doors and windows to vent the heat, then close them again and turn the AC to medium. That saves energy and your AC.
  • Water Heaters

    • Water heaters are set 50-70 degrees above air temperature; a simple water heater blanket from any department store can save you 10%.
    • Instant gas water heaters only heat water when you need it, the rest of the time it's off and you're saving money and energy.
    • Gas water heaters are cheaper to operate, more efficient and heat water faster than electric.
    • Place your water heater where you use the most hot water to conserve more energy. Shorter pipes means less heat loss on the trip from water heater to faucet.
    • Most water heaters are set to 140 degrees, but you can't shower or wash dishes in that, it's too hot. Try lowering it to 120 degrees, this can save you 10%.
  • Refrigerator

    • Clean your refrigerator filter twice a year when dust collects on the vents and air intakes the condenser cooler has to work a lot harder, using more energy.
    • Leave some space for airflow when you put your fridge in place.
    • Let food cool before putting it in the refrigerator. Hot meals in the fridge raise the temperature of everything and your cooling bill. Cover and wait 40 minutes before placing in the fridge.
