Since 1904, Hawaiʻi Gas has been the only franchised gas utility in the state of Hawaiʻi. From the company's early years supplying gas to homes and businesses on O'ahu, we have installed gas pipeline infrastructure and bulk storage facilities, developed a highly skilled, dedicated workforce, and built a fleet of over 60 gas delivery vehicles and over 150 customer service and utility vehicles to across the state.
In 1974, we began operating the Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) Plant in West Oʻahu using an innovative method to create SNG from a petroleum co-product. For over 50 years, and to this day, Hawai'i Gas has pioneered the use of up to 15% zero-emissions hydrogen in its fuel—more than any other utility company in the nation—providing safe, resilient energy to thousands of homes and businesses. We distribute liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG (propane), to residential and commercial customers throughout the state.
As we look to the future, we are focused on clean energy solutions: in 2018, Hawai‘i Gas was the first in the state to capture and process Renewable Natural Gas, or biogas, from the City and County of Honolulu’s Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant on O‘ahu, which now makes up 3% of the island’s utility fuel mix. We continue to invest in technology that can further diversify and decarbonize our fuel mix, providing residential, commercial, and industrial customers with safe, reliable, and affordable energy.
We take the responsibility of achieving net-zero carbon emissions seriously, and are doing our part to help the state reach carbon neutrality by 2045, our kuleana as stewards of the environment and our island communities.

Gas is a critical part of a safe, resilient fuel mix, which supports a stable energy infrastructure and paves the way for Hawaiʻi’s clean energy future.
On Oʻahu, a diverse fuel mix fuels thousands of homes and businesses across the island: our1,100 miles of pipeline network currently accommodates a mix of synthetic natural gas (SNG), renewable natural gas (RNG), and up to 15% hydrogen. That is more utility hydrogen than any other utility company in the nation. Low-carbon emissions propane is part of everyday living for thousands of other homeowners and businesses across the islands.
Founded in 1904 as the Honolulu Gas Company, Ltd., the company has a history of pioneering local innovation. The original Iwilei plant began production converting bunker fuel oil for ships to gas—one of the first plants of its kind worldwide. 120 years later, we have offices on every major island and operations serving utility and non-utility customers throughout the state.
We remain committed to providing safe, affordable energy solutions and creating a better quality of life for our communities.
You can count on knowledgeable, professional, and helpful service from Hawai’i Gas at every step of the customer journey. From our account executives and customer service team to service technicians, delivery drivers, and utility workers, we are committed to providing exceptional service and value.
We strengthen the communities we serve by fostering partnerships with impactful local non-profit organizations. Hawaiʻi Gas supports a diverse set of local non-profits and sponsors events that enhance the vitality of our neighborhoods. Our partnerships are more than just a charitable donations program—they are a force for good that deliver a brighter future for Hawaiʻi.
As president and chief executive office of Hawaiʻi Gas since May 2013, Alicia Moy leads the company in its work to support the positive transformation of Hawaiʻi’s energy landscape and achievement of the state’s climate goals. Under her leadership, the company is keenly focused on lowering the state’s high cost of energy for customers, providing diverse and resilient clean energy solutions, and developing renewable gas projects that are among the best in the nation.
During her tenure, Alicia and her team have pushed forward several innovative and cutting-edge projects that are changing the energy landscape in Hawaii. In 2016, Hawaiʻi Gas established Waihonu Solar Farm, the largest active solar farm on Oahu at the time of its dedication. The project generates a total of 6.5 MW or enough energy to power 1,000 homes. Understanding that diverse energy options are important to the landscape of the state, Hawaiʻi Gas also created the state’s first renewable natural gas project in partnership with the City & County of Honolulu at the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant. Since the launch in 2018, this award-winning project produces up to 800,000 therms per year, thus eliminating the energy equivalent of 15,000 barrels of oil or the emissions that 400 vehicles would release in a year. Hawaiʻi Gas is actively engaged in expanding its renewable gas portfolio, while also exploring future energy solutions, such as hydrogen, a zero-carbon emission fuel, to meet the state’s carbon neutrality goals.
Prior to joining Hawaiʻi Gas, Alicia was senior vice president at Macquarie. Alicia has served as a member of the Hawaiʻi Gas board of directors since 2011. She also serves on the boards of Bank of Hawaiʻi, and the Western Energy Institute, and is a trustee of the Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi. Additionally, Alicia is an Omidyar Fellow and sits on the advisory board for Women in Renewable Energy and Holomua Collective. Her expertise in utility and energy has given her a unique and holistic perspective on the integrated nature of Hawaiʻi’s energy ecosystem, and how it must transform to meet the state’s carbon neutrality goals.
